What is Collagen?
Collagen, an important protein produced by the body, is the main structural protein found in the skin, tendon, and bone. The word collagen originates from a Greek word that “kola” means gum and “gen” means producing. Collagen is considered to be one of the most useful biomaterials.
Collagen is comprised of a series of amino acids, giving it a unique amino acid profile that is known for having high levels of glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and alanine. Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins, and are essential for producing hormones and moving chemical messages through the body, all of which help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, and nails to stay as healthy as possible.
BENEFITS OF 1 – BOVINE COLLAGEN
Here are a few benefits the list goes on and on…
- The collagen in your skin is primarily made up of types I and III collagen, meaning that bovine collagen may be especially useful for reducing wrinkles, promoting elasticity, and increasing skin moisture
- Tangible results for skin, hair and nails are seen in as soon as four weeks. And with consistent, daily supplementation,
- Best results are achieved from 12 weeks -As collagen intake works by replenishing collagen peptides to stimulate its production.Studies have consistently shown a positive correlation between collagen and estrogen levels. That means the more collagen you have, the more estrogen you’re likely to have.
- 19 Amino acids as your body only makes 9, there are total of 22 amino acids and in this collagen you are getting 19.
- By taking collagen supplements when oestrogen levels are low, you too can help to enhance the appearance of skin elasticity, helping you feel your best self.
- Collagen for menopause can also help promote glossier hair when you may have noticed thinning or a less full shape.
- Collagen helps in promoting satiety to promote weight loss, help to reduce stress reactions to prevent premature ageing, and increasing oestrogen levels to keep your skin youthful and radiant.
- You also are probably aware that a decrease in your body’s natural collagen production is one of the many reasons our skin begins to wrinkle and sag as we age. The not-so-obvious—Your body’s estrogen levels and skin’s ability to produce collagen are directly linked.
- Great for hair, skin & nails – watch how your hair grows…
- Reduced signs of ageing, fine lines and wrinkles owing to improved skin hydration and elasticity
- Stronger, healthier hair and nails
- Increased joint mobility and bone mineral density
- Assistance with inflammation and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis
- Optimal gut and digestive health
- Improved blood vessel elasticity
- Muscle growth and maintenance
- Maintenance of connective tissue
HOW TO TAKE COLLAGEN

More about collagen
Our body produces collagen naturally and it is in abundance when we are younger, but unfortunately this natural production starts to decline from the age of 25, and continues to decline further as we age – during menopause, a woman’s collagen synthesis is drastically reduced even further. Additionally, exposure to ultraviolet light, exercise, smoking and pollution, excessive intake of sugar, genetics and stress can hasten the depletion of collagen in the body even further.
This loss of collagen can cause the skin to lose elasticity resulting in premature aging, skin sagging and deep-set wrinkles. Hair starts thinning and loses its natural colour. Additionally, the loss can cause joint cartilage to weaken, increasing one’s vulnerability for joint inflammation, pain, stiffness and the likelihood for injury, as joints aren’t as flexible and bones lose their density.
Supplementing with collagen is an easy and effective way to counter this natural loss of collagen, and prevent many health conditions.
Some further benefits from supplementing with collagen may include:
- Assist in weight loss
- Fat metabolism
- Hormone metabolism
- Reduced appearance of cellulite and stretch marks
- Stimulated collagen formation and production
- Assistance with joint pain, stiffness and mobility
- Assistance with symptoms of arthritis
- Natural anti-inflammatory properties
- Assistance with rebuilding of cartilage
- Protective heart and cardiovascular effects
- Support of liver function
- Improved wound healing
- May promote weight loss and management
- Improved sleep quality
Who should be taking it?
Anyone can take collagen. We usually recommend that one starts in their mid to late twenties, as younger than this, one’s natural collagen production is still at its optimum.
How to take it?
Our collagen is easily digested, is highly soluble and extremely versatile. It can be used in just about anything from a hot cup of coffee, to an ice-cold protein smoothie.
All you need is 1-2 scoops / TBSP of our collagen added to your daily routine to reap the amazing benefits.
We usually recommend Type I (bovine) collagen not be taken together with Type II (chicken) collagen as they tend to compete for absorption in the gut, and this could hinder optimal absorption of either products, therefore they should be taken at different times of the day.
